Just thought I'd add in that i'm having the exact same issue. Fresh install
from the Hardy RC live CD (+ updates available as of now + latest rt kernel)
This is with a Nvidia 6200 LE
xorg.0.log stops just before
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX

Same problem in gutsy just so as you know. Not tried the solution yet
but don't have the mentioned directory or file so not hugely optimistic,
maybe I'm missing some package or other?

as suggested in the forum topic linked to in my original bug report
seems to have worked for me (i've not had the problem since) but I
may just have got lucky - I've not gone looking for trouble as i don't
really fancy taking my laptop to bits again.
