Could we please at least raise the "importance" of this task? It is really critical since a) laptop is unusable when on batery, and b) picture is too bright and washed out when on full brightness. I understand that it has to do with nvidia and/or sony, but this does not make it any less important.

Any news? I managed to fix the sony_laptop module to work with the Vaio VGN-NR31 and register the Fn keypresses as ACPI events. If anyone wants the fixed module please contact me. But the serious problem is the lack of knowledge about the nvidia 8 series smartdimmer internals. Any luck with this?
