sorry, you are right. I mixed up the path in my previous posting. It is
of course /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf I also have a
blacklist.local.conf file created for my own changes and I am also
running 64bit meerkat. Did blacklisting intel_ips help you?

I was able to fix this problem for the moment by adding intel_ips to
/etc/modprobe/blacklist.local.conf
Sounds works perfectly fine now.
