The issue is completely fixed in Hardy (32 bit)
I run Ubuntu most days 3-4 hours with none of the reported problems
occurring.
I have updated the launchpad entry with the above comment.

I can't find anything that looks releven't in the log, looks like a
perfectly normal boot. is there anything specific i should be looking

I tried the Hardy 2.6.24.1 kernel as per your instructions
1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted
2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new

Yes the bug is still present.
I Have checked my memory, no problems on memtest or my Debian4.0 or win
XP systems on this box.
This is definately not a thermal problem my box runs very cool.
This is a complete lock up, I can't open virtual
mory 1035MB (412MB used)
