I'm assigning this to myself, but I'm inclined to mark this as WONTFIX,
since development effort has shifted 100% to Blender 2.5. As per my
previous comment I think that you should find better performance there.

This is most likely an issue with the driver. To verify this, get the
static build from http://download.blender.org/release for the release
version you want to check. If this works, then you have a buggy driver.
This should always be checked with crashes that have mention of a driver
in their backt
