I have the same type of problem with an Intel 5300 AGN card in my Dell Laptop.
The router is a LiveBox (the Orange proprietary type where you have to let it
enter a "pairing mode" to accept connections) and I have not had any trouble
connecting to it with either the same laptop when I boot it in
Btw, debugging with NetBeans (xdebug) also stopped working after I upgraded to
the 1.5 version of Firebug (which also caused the crash(es) everybody is
reporting). Downgrading to 1.4.5 has now fixed both Firebug *and* debugging
with xdebug from NetBeans.
How are these related?

Switched to a network with a D-LINK router in "WPA2 Only" mode, using TKIP &
AES cipher and it now works...
