I'm having the same problem. I never used 9.04 due to some issues with intel graphics, so I didn't have the indicator applet before Karmic. But I'm keen on using it. I'm on a fresh install of 9.10 (while keeping my /home partition from 8.10). The applet always shows (0) on my evolution email POP
