I recently tested 13.10 on a intel+nvidia system (using nouveau) and got
the same behavior. So it seem is this is more a general problem with
hybrid graphics and not specific to the radeon driver.

It's getting even funnier. By disabling the radeon graphics card there

The problem did not occur in releases prior to raring (just checked
12.10 from a live-usb and there is only one monitor output). Raring is
special: When running unity I didn't noticed the bug because the second
imaginary monitor is disabled by default (but still present in the
system settings). How
Tested 3.11.0-031100rc5-generic and the bug is still present. Note: I've
filed the bug against the linux package because of this bot-comment but
I'm really no expert and don't know if this was right.

This happens on 12.04, 12.10, 13.04. The system language I choose during
installation is german. When I look up my language it stats "Deutsch
(Deutschland)" but in Thunderbird the language selected by default is
"Deutsch/Belgien". This results in incorrect spell checking. The
I've played with my laptop a little bit more more and this behavior
appears only if a headphone is pluged in and the sound indicator in the
login screen is muted (tested with two different headphones).

However when I logout and login again sound does not work but the sound
