With Ubuntu Hardy the problem still exists. Currently I don't plan to
upgrade the machine further. I'll try to test it with an Ubuntu dapper
cups in the future. If that won't work I'm afraid it's a hardware
problem.

I have the same problem too. Looks like my 4039 10 plus had issues with
the generated ps file.
If you enable printing of PS errors(On the front panel: MENUS -> setup
menu -> Print PS Error -> On) the printer give you an extra page with
some error reports.
