I haven't tested Rhythmbox against ALSA (been using PulseAudio for quite
some time), but there is something with either Rhythmbox/gstreamer/PA
that caused PA to crash when I was in the console and Rhythmbox switched
to the next song. I think it is a different bug report though.

Confirmed, I just filed a bug about pulseaudio not working after logging
in again. Perhaps a console-kit issue?.
I have long dropped the use of 'startx' but use straight GDM. Although
many problems arose with it, namely SCIM the environment variables not

I'm using up-to-date Ubuntu Hardy. Usually at boot I have two X sessions
running: One is a normal GDM/GNOME session and the other is started in a
virtual terminal with 'startx', running a plain ".xinitrc". Pulseaudio
works fine switching to and from VTs.

Sorry, I just installed Hardy on my main machine. Without even asking,
it completely removed all of my data in all other partitions which are
not /home. The message showed up when installing was 'Removing

This bug also occurred when I had Rhythmbox playing in one X server and
switched to the other X. It looks like some behaviors in libnotify or
the notification daemon that triggers a bug in X, but I'm not familiar
enough with both's code to comment on.

'Lost connection' to X server when staying
It did happen under icewm, only the message was slightly different:
Backtrace:

Fatal server error:

xinit: connection to X server lost
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything of useful in the log.
startx/xinit/X output these lines when it happened:

I think (s)he meant the X server log.
It also happened to me without compiz :) . Here is the X log without
compiz running and with minimal number of applications started (only
Rhythmbox and SCIM, if toolbar applets don't count).

I'm not sure where the origin of this bug comes from, but I can reproduce it
reliably on my machine:
- Have compiz running under GNOME.
- Have Rhythmbox play a song.
- Switch to any console and wait for that song to finish. When it switches to
a new song, which normally a
