I eventually got them working, partly by reinstalling the kernel source,
partly by POWERING DOWN and restarting, rather than just restarting,
partly by reading this:

The fact it did not work right from the start
After upgrading my kernel source and powering off and on my machine the
situation has improved. I can now see the speakers on the dropdown menu
in the Audio config window. But still no sound.
