I removed the nvidia-glx and nvidia-settings. I then killed gdm and
installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.31-pkg2.run the problem went away
-- no issues with X->VT->X.

Two more clue for this problem. When I switch from X to VT back to X,
the keyboard still works to the extent that if I momentarily press and
release the power switch and then press enter, the machine will power
off exactly as though the power off pop-up was displayed (the default

problem certainly seems to related to server version as opposed to
generic.
Also, another clue, when the system suspends (I suppose it is going into

I am pretty sure that this is an old bug re-incarnated but I do not find
the problem described in terms that seem completely similar. I am
running ubuntu 9.10. using Nvidia 185 driver on an i7 cpu and asus mobo
with out over-clocking anything. The hardware seems good. Here i
