I can confirm this bug. cntlm does not start automatically on system
startup. so i have to do a 'sudo service cntlm start' manually.
i am using karmic koala beta.

I noticed my laptop cpu getting heated up while the machine was idle and
disconnected from internet. 'top' showed around 50% cpu usage by gnome-
panel, followed by main.py. stopping ntlm with 'sudo service ntlmaps
stop' solved the issue. i guess gnome-panel was trying to update weather
information
The error messages do not appear any more after updating to kernel
2.6.31-14.

I can confirm this bug.
Muting the alert volume does not disable keyboard bell.

I too have the same problem. Indicator applet doesn't change the icon
and it keeps showing (0) messages against my account even when I have
received a few new mails.
