You're right, the problem is linked with the memory and swapoff was a
workaround that worked only if the need of memory was not too high.
I installed a kernel 5.4, and the problem also disapeared. I will stay
with this, even if the laptop is not in stand by mode when I close the
lid.

I have some strange comportements with evince in firefox since my last
migration from feisty to gutsy.
Most of the time, I have a gray window with the evince menu bar and a
"Loading..." message.

It worked in feisty but the support for SSL/TLS seems to have been disable in
Gutsy compilation of mail-notification (with the autodetect authentication).

I just tried a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and it reworks.
It puts a driver "ati" in the device section of my xorg.conf in place of the
"radeon". If I put "radeon" again, it continues to work but I lost 500FPS in
glxgears.

I have the same kind of problem since a gutsy upgrade this morning
(30/09/2007). I was already in gutsy after a migration from festy a few
days ago.
After waiting a few minutes I have to kill the X server because it seems to
doesn't start.
I attached my xorg.log.

I know. When I had installed the free radeon driver, I prealably
desinstalled the fglrx driver and fixed the symbolic link. The fglrx
libGl was left in the directory even if it wasn't used (I forgot to
remove it because I had put it manually to fix a 3D problem when I used
fglrx) and it seems that
resolved!
Long time ago, when ati broke the 3D support on ati 92000 card with its
propriaritary driver, I used a workaround by creating a symbolic link between
libGL and an older version of libGL:
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.propriaritary_lib_before_broken_support
after, ati finally
+1. same problem with a radeon 9200 after edgy -> feisty migration.
I put my xorg.conf in attachment (not sure that it still used)
