Title:
attemting to upgrade or downgrade kernel packages: package linux-
image-2.6.38-13-generic 2.6.38-13.57~lucid1 failed to install/upgrade:
Public bug reported:
This happened when upgrading to kernel 2.6.40 generic on lucid desktop
I installed this kernel 2.6.38-13 so I could purge the updated kernel,
and the same error reports.
I am going to try apt-get purge nvidia-common to see what happens.

DistroRelease: U
This occurred to me after
1 dist upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04
2 apt-get clean
3 apt-get autoclean
4 some other cleanup involving booting up with a rescue CD, (and, critically,
cleaning the /tmp directory) in order to tar up the image for future deployment
in the field (20 laptops).
unable to log
I have a bare-metal install of lucid 10.04.2. The bug seems to have
been resolved.

into a running system. Both worked. I document the "boot up" path
here.
Wizard recognized and set up the modem

returns 0)

Can you please post the preferred workaround?
I have this exact issue in a fully-patched lucid (10.04.2) deployment
that has already chewed up hours of my time over the past week. It
started with VMware ws7 not being
this appears to be happening in lucid 10.04.01
