the problem was not really a bug, but finding the solution took up
several hours of research which didn't get me anywhere. finally, i just
blank mindedly right clicked the gnome panel, clicked add to panel
selected notification area, and VOILA! the sought after icon appeared.
that was it.
Apparently, the correct applet is "network-manager-gnome", and i do have it
installed. It, however, does not appear in the "Add to Panel" menu. Any ideas
on how to get it there?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ok, so i went through the synaptic list again... to try and find the
right applet and i found gnome-status-applet (installed) version 2.28.0,
which coincides with the "About" information. So obviously this is not
the correct applet.
So I unistalled this, but lo and behold, after a restart the appl
