Also with the new kernel 2.6.32-20.29, still the same problem, the only
difference is that the 'choose to keep settings' window doesn't freeze
any more, but the problem is the same-the visual effects don't work at
all.

The problem is exactly what you described, only that I have Intel
graphics. I can reproduce it very easily, it happens every time I open
my notebook :-(.

Hi, well I experienced this bug few minutes ago, after an update my gnome
network manager was dead, I restarted the systemr but nothing happened, no
internet access, so I don't have wireless internet; wired internet still work
though.
I un- and installed the gnome network manager several times
If this help: I have the crash everytime I close google earth, happened
at least three times.
