This has affected me on every Ubuntu since 9.04 at least. Working with remote files through sftp was a PITA. It was one of the reasons for me to end up using Kate. Kate doesn't use GVFS, so it won't hang, just reconnects when needed. I'm returning slowly to Gedit as it evolves, so maybe I will rep
