started when I installed Ubuntu over Fedora was merely a coincidence and
not a problem with Ubuntu itself.

Hi, i have a similar problem that has been present since a couple of
months with various driver versions, and i finally made it dissapear
with nvidia-current-updates a month ago, and it worked just fine until
today.
System info: Intel i7 2500k
8GB Ram
Intel SSD
Gfx: 01:00.
Confirmed in both 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (Kernel 2.6.28-generic) and
11.04 Natty Narwahl (2.6.38-8).
