Update: I bought this HDMI3.0 to DVI-D cable
(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DI89K7K) and still no luck.
120Hz is not working either, which I would have hoped would work.

Wow, thanks. My old setup used DVI. I either need to get a new HDMI 1.3
cable or some kind of fantastic HDMI to DVI adapter.

I have a new **Asus F556U** laptop and an **Asus VG248QE** monitor that
I cannot get into 144Hz mode. It is stuck in 60Hz. This is causing awful
eye strain and I
I have this issue with Nvidia X Server Settings. I can set the refresh
rate there, but if I reboot, it returns to the auto mode (which chooses
60Hz over 144Hz).

I use a cordless keyboard & mouse. Once replaced with a corded one, I could
