I used an ugly solution to get rid of the popups:
sudo chmod -x /usr/lib/notification-daemon/notification-daemon

Well, this shouldn't be considered a bug, apparently it is just that the
gnome-terminal is programmed to use Alt instead of Meta which I think is
standard for the keybindings of Readline.

I agree. If extra functionality that can be disturbing is implemented,
it should not be necessary to do a Google search for a way to turn it
off.

Also, I have mapped Compose key to the "Menu key". This works in almost
all applications, but not in the gnome-terminal, where it instead will
open the menu.
