Supposedly it does support 7.1, it doesn't just work out of the box on
Linux that way. I have mine set up for Stereo output / Mono Input. It
is not necessarily important that it supports 7.1 for my own purposes
either. Because frankly very few, if any, applications I use regularly

I came across this problem when doing a clean install of Lucid.
I had an existing /home partition which was not formatted. I'm not sure
if the installer overwrote my .bashrc, but I couldn't login to GDM after
the install was finished. I overwrote my .bashrc with the default Lucid
skeleton version
I know there are at least two other bug reports related to this package,
both in Debian and Ubuntu bug-tracking.
What is the process to get Hamish's workaround signed off for release?
