Just to say that I have the same bug.
It is affecting me in the latest Ubuntu release as it is in the latest Lubuntu.
The setting of the variable is not a proper solution. Isn't there another way
to fix this and behave more automatically?
I made a simple script to call evince/okular with the
Thx Kakaroto and Dennis Trinh.
It worked for me too.

I upgraded the ubuntu to 8.10 alpha4 I tried the new 2.6.27 Ununtu
kernel. The system get stuck in the boot again but in a different place:
the last message was: Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle
I found a solution on the web that was to boot with the option: nohz=off
