Tried to install ubuntu 20.04.2. The disk has partitions so i tried to
have it reformat an existing partition (leaving hte other partitions
untouched) and mount / - install fails - no clue why no information
provided.

I have the same problem (not over heating but xorg now constant
spinning). Prior to upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 never had this issue. At
first I thought it might be related to application but even when nothing
is running the x server just spins.

One more piece of information; to make this work I have to manually run
gparted created the partitions and create the bios_thingy for it to
correctly install the boot loader. After I did this the install with
user selected partition sizes worked but this seems excessive for an
install process.

I think this should be reopened. I just ran into the same issue here are the
details:

I used a 18.04 iso; the ssd had never been used - i select custom setup so i
can create partition sizes. The 18.04 installer chooses to use fat filesystem
and then fails install grup.
Clearly there is a bug
btw i'm not claiming this is a linux bug but rather 18.04 installer bug.
