One more piece of information; to make this work I have to manually run gparted created the partitions and create the bios_thingy for it to correctly install the boot loader. After I did this the install with user selected partition sizes worked but this seems excessive for an install process. --

I think this should be reopened. I just ran into the same issue here are the details: - I used a 18.04 iso; the ssd had never been used - i select custom setup so i can create partition sizes. The 18.04 installer chooses to use fat filesystem and then fails install grup. Clearly there is a bug
