I think the error happens because Lucid does not install the program
patch that is required to install bcm and also for other installations.
This is a fairly common program in *nix. I expected this package to be
installed by default.

this sounds interesting, but when I tried to find the "loose binding"
option I couldn't find it. I'm running the compiz installed by default.

Yes, it is. What I did was to updated the packages and upgrade the linux
kernel (2.6.31.14.48 I guess, but see below). Then, reboot. After the
boot, the first thing I did was to open a terminal and alsamixer. The
result: microphone was not working and the capture items were unchecked
in alsamixer.
more on the microphone issue: although I can enable the microphone by
using the gnome-alxamixer (or alsamixer in the terminal) the microphone
options keep getting unchecked. This is very annoying and every time I
try to use skype I have my microphone muted. I cannot tell whether the
reason for that

checking a "rec" checkbox under "Capture". This must have been unchecked
somehow by some application. The strange thing was the no option in the
gnome-volume-control or any other standard location allowed me to fix it

I would like to add a note about another message that is showing up
after the white ubuntu logo and the xsplash. I installed using a desktop
alternate CD with full encryption.
As expected I'm asked for the passphrase with the white ubuntu logo.

I have a BCM4322 Broadcom wireless device running on Ubuntu 8.10 w.
linux kernel 2.6.27-9-generic. Using Network-manager I'm able to connect
to an Ad-hoc network using WEP passphrase, however I cannot create an
Ad-hoc network. To exclude the possibility of a bug in Network-man
I believe they are related problems but not exactly the same. The icon
changes in Gnome 2.24 seems to be the cause of these bugs that broke
icons. The one I described might be just one more, so it's not exactly a
duplicate, but an extension of the bug 278033. That bug only mention the

missing in the folder emblems of some of the icon themes. This might be
related to the fact that several others emblem icons are missing for

I tested the Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 6 live CD and found the same odd
behavior.
In addition to that, I change themes and it also happens on Clearlooks
what indicates that this is theme-independent. If you want you can
easily replicate it:
1. set "single-click" in nautilus preferences

nouveXT icons and Rezlook metacity. I'm using the Silicon controls and
running Beryl/Emerald with a ATI X300 and the open-source driver.
