according to aptitude, has been replaced with mediamanager and
kdemultimedia-kio-plugins. After installing both these packages,
however, problem still exists.

Having the same problem, but I'm running Mepis 2.6.22-1-mepis-smp. I am
only using Etch's stable repositories. Does anyone know if upgrading to
the "testing" repositories would fix this problem?

found more info on the web, read other instances of people with the same
problem after a kernel update. Reinstalling the nvidia driver fixes the
problem.

I am having the same problem, but I don't know what information you need
from me. I've got an nvidia go 6100, the latest debian kernel, compiz
isn't installed, I don't know what xgl is but I don't think I have it
installed.
