I hit this today while upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 as well. I have 3 hard
drives, 2 with just data . I first did a standard upgrade with Update manager,
then did a compleate reinstall after downloading the 32bit download to a USB
drive. Same error "symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found
Still a constant problem. with partial upgrade failing to install and
error message stating "run dpkg --configure -a"

When adjusting the display from the highest setting the screen goes black and
then I have to reboot. The screen is on the highest resolutoin when booting up.
