I also had to edit nsswitch.conf
This fix worked for me, i am now able to connect and the connection is much
faster.
In /etc/nsswitch.conf, I replaced :
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
with
hosts: files dns
Note both the client and server are Ubuntu boxes connecting to
