I updated to vte 1:0.16.0-0ubuntu4, stopped all gnome-terminals and
spawned a new one, but I still get the issue.
When I switch the virtual desktop out of the gnome-terminal and back
again, most of the times it is blank.

I think that this should help. The problem for me seems to be some
character that Java IO cannot cope with.
You can also try using other vm like
eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/java

I have disabled "lock screen when screensaver is active" but still I
get lock after resume from suspend.
"Do nothing" is not an option for me, because I want to suspend the
laptop, when I close the lid. There really should be an option for
disabling the lock when resuming from suspend.

java-gcj-compat | java-runtime1 | java-runtime2. Anyone of these should
yield jvm for eclipse. However, gij-4.1 installed on default Edgy
provides java-runtime1, but does not suffice to run eclipse.
