I'm afraid not. I've kept my system up to date. I now have:

On the bright side, my iPod works again. So I guess this bug can be

This is still broken in hardy:
adding '3' to the end of my grub command line still resulted in runlevel 2. It
appears that the fix mentioned in comment 4 hasn't yet made it to hardy.
