I have upgraded the system after some time (I had to retain some
upgrades due to Ubuntu SDK being incompatible with some new packages for
some time) and the problem has disappeared. I thought I should report
so.

I tried using the global menu, and now it works. It doesn't look as good
as before: the item you click doesn't get a
shadow/surrounded/highlighted and there's no continuum between the item
selected and the drop down GUI, but the menu does work.

The global menu appears properly at first. But, when I click on it, it
disappears completely. Nevertheless, I still can access the menu through
the Alt key and searching for the menu manually there.
