I have the same problem with my HP Pavilion Laptop model dv9810us.
When Ubuntu 8.10 starts booting it stops until I hold down the CTRL key
for a short time and then everything is normal.

I fixed the problem by first getting the nvidia settings setup perfectly
the way I want it. I then deleted the xorg.conf and wrote the settings
to the file from within Nvidia setup. Then I renamed the xorg.conf and
ran this command as root:
dexconf

I have an HP Pavilion laptop with HP Quickdock to export to 24" monitor.
When I use Nvidia X-Server Settings and get everything correctly
configured and then export to xorg.conf file, everything is fine until I
reboot. I set xorg.conf permissions to 777 and it doesn't matter.
