It looks like I was able to resolve this bug on my system after the
following steps;

I have experienced the 'white screeen of death' in 11.04 and 11.10.
I have blacklisted the 'nouveau' driver for nVidia, but still get white screens.
I get white screens with and without the noveau driver; with and without compiz.
To reproduce;

Actually, my white screens problem is not completely gone;
There is no white screen problem for at least several hours after
logging in.
At some point, an application running in a full-screen window will go
white-screen, but the header of its window is still visible.

I also had the blank screens problem described by Robertev in #7 above,
after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. I may have found a work-
around for it;
