This popped up again today on my system (Ubuntu 13.10), in the middle of
a session, without having just installed any updates or anything. I was
able to (temporarily) fix it by running compiz --replace (i.e. I didn't
have to change any settings anywhere, just restart the window manager).
However,
I just added respawn to /etc/init/lightdm.conf as suggested in comment
#48 - did /not/ fix the problem for me.

After further troubleshooting, I begin to think that the new unity
desktop doesn't honor *any* of the CompizConfig settings - it's not just
the autohide of the launcher that's causing a fuss, but also lots of
