More evidence you are right: the Ponyo dvd has ~8gb on it, which would
seem to indicate (I don't actually know any other way) that it is a
DVD-9.

I have very similar behavior on the 9.10 and 9.04 machines around my
house. I load Ponyo (Miyazaki's latest, just out on DVD), run
# lsdvd /dev/sr0
and get the following output:

check at intervals when I have time, and it works fine.
