Just wanted to mention that an unstable TSC can cause *severe*
crackling/popping on the Audigy series of cards.
If you see a line line "Unstable TSC detected" in your dmesg output, try
adding the notsc option to your kernel boot line, reboot, and see if the

Yes, I reproduced it in Jaunty. No, it is not fixed as of 03/27/09. In
fact, I check the status of this bug every day when my computer screen
locks and my full name does not show up on the login screen (KDE3.5
kdesktoplock uses an identical mechanism to retrieve the user's full
name). ;-)

This issue occurs on every Intrepid machine that I have (so far, three
independent computers).
Rarely, pw_gecos will work properly. However, the very next call to
pw_gecos once again returns no information.

instead of testuser--that was me, not the program. I was trying to mask
my user ID; oops! :-)

Intrepid's new Winbind version (Samba 3.2) does not populate pw_gecos
