This is not btrfs issue, just tested that. Live cd of Ubuntu 11.04 boots
on 512 machine and runs most of time with zero swap usage. On the same
machine lubuntu 11.10 and xubuntu 11.10 boot up with 100+ mb of swap
used, on a system without any btrfs partition.

Ok, I did it from live session, since it behaves quite the same way. On
boot it had 150 Mb in swap, 29 in buffers, 106 in cache.

restarts), which all seem to be produced by keypresses. I don't remember

Currentlly there is version 1.6.0 of xfce4-screenshooter in lucid
repository. The problem is that at least with russian locale "open with"
feature does not work due to space in temporary file name and a bug that
it does not escape file
Well, it seems that system reboot was required. That's strange, since I
don't remembery any driver updates that required reboot. After I
reinstalled the driver and rebooted the system everything works great.

Attached - xorg log. Diff with uncrashed GDM Xorg log show that crash
happens somewhere around line 274.
Also there is nothing special in dmesg log, just a regular nvidia driver
restart.
And in syslog:

Interesting thing is that exactly password field triggers the bug. If
you choose "other..." you get text field to enter user name and it works

Confirming. Made all updates, installed xubuntu-gdm-theme back and the
bug is still here. Removed xubuntu-gdm-theme for now, waiting for patch.
Bug importance should be critical, such bugs just shouldn't get into
release, since for unexperienced users it just means that system is
unusable.

I get exactly the same error, using nvidia-96 driver and having gdm
theme installed (in my case it is xubuntu-gdm-theme). If you remove
*-gdm-theme package it starts working.
But as it is, it makes xubuntu/ubuntu unusable for unexperienced user
after they have installed nvidia drivers. So, in my o

set DSL connection (it is grayed out). At the same time, Ubuntu Jaunty
network manager works like a charm. At another box I have both ubuntu-

Okay, I think I've found out the solution. Here is the story: I have 2
kubuntu 8.04 installations on the same machine, but one of these
installations have this bug, the other - have not. So, I've starting
comparing configurations and started with apm-related stuff, but it was
quite similar, and the
I do experience this on fresh, fully updated kubuntu 8.04 installation,
with 2.6.24-23-generic kernel.
TerminateServer trick worked, but this bug is very annoying, esp. for
not experienced users.

Kubuntu Hardy alpha 4 live session - most of kcontrol wont work due to
missing libpython2.5.so problem. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libpython2.5.so.1.0
/usr/lib/libpython2.5.so solves it.
