Aaaand on actually studying the problem in depth I found the cause. The
problem is not in the package, it's in my Ubuntu install. False alarm,
as far as this bug is concerned.

False alarm. Turned out to be a problem with the mirror troubles causing
me to get the wrong image and not checking the actual *filename*.
Cannot reproduce in 8.04.
