Without the following patch, wrong exit status code would be reported.

Not a big issue, but it would be better to backport this patch together.

My co-worker found another related problem and we needed to fix that alongside.
I need his answer to know whether it affects how to reproduce this bug on 16.04.
We may need another backport, but I'm not sure at the moment.
