Apparently I spoke too soon: I'm still getting the resume failure with
the latest updates of Karmic. I haven't had a chance to test the
mainline kernel yet, but here is the answers to the Suspend/Resume
questions listed above:

As of recent updates (not sure when exactly) this problem has resolved itself.
It may have been caused by the poor performance of the intel graphics chip on
my computer, as the problem got better when the graphics performance improved
(using UXA).

Aha! In trying to repeat the bug I discovered a condition. It only
seems to occur if a pdf is already open in another workspace. I didn't
notice this before because I always have a pdf or two open for
reference in another workspace.

Quick follow-up:
twoopt.sty is provided by the package "texlive" or one of its dependencies.
Until this point I had texlive-base installed, but not texlive.
Note this is still a bug, but should be able to fix by simple correcting
the dependencies of the texlive-science package.

1. The restricted drivers program installs the fwcutter in such a way that it
