Actually, I take it back...it didn't bork my desktop UNTIL I rebooted.
I tried the dconf and unity reset approach, but ended up having to kill
my wubi install...hopefully I'll be back up and running by this mo
This hasn't borked my desktop, but, I know I've had trouble with the
NVIDIA 31x series Forceware drivers on my Win 7 partition, too, so, at
least it doesn't discriminate *sheepish grin*

Okay, I switched to the recommended NVIDIA driver, the current version,
and so far (knock on wood), Ubuntu hasn't frozen once, and I've been on
this session for well over 3 hours. So, it is the "updated" version of
the NVIDIA driver that was to blame, or so it seems.

Nothing is happening under Unity 2D, though, during this current
session, I had a dialog come up that said that "Ubuntu 12.04 has
encountered a problem" Nothing else happened, but that does concern me.
That also happens under Unity 3D from time to time.

No blinking lights on keyboard when it hangs, no. No errors with
MemTest 86+. Went off without a hitch. Attempting to recreate in Unity
2D.

And yes, the pointer can be moved, but it frequently freezes again. I've had 2
instances where Ubuntu recovered briefly.
As to whether or not it happens in Unity 2D, I'm not sure. I rarely use
anything but Unity 3D. However, I will see if it does happen in 2D, but, it
seems to happen sporadic
