The default gs on my system freezes
after trying to load inexisting fonts.
Additionally, the system becomes almost unresponsive,

Shift+Ins works as you described.
I would never expect Ctrl-V and Shift+Ins doing different things :-)

The same happens on my 6.10 box at work
This bug has been present for a long time, a few years at least.
It occured also on debian sarge.
Whenever there is an open file in the editor box,
pasting to search box makes changes in the editor box.
I'd love to see this fixed :-)

Just to let you know that I also seem to have a problem
with this bug on edgy.
My program uses libImlib.so.11 for drawing images into an XWindow.
This functionality has been stable at least since 2000.
The problem manifests only with random garbled images displayed.
No crash whatsoever.
