The problem may be because the 5Ghz band is reserved for wireless N
devices - is your machine running a wireless-N compatible card, with
correct wireless-N compatible drivers?
If you can only connect on the 2.4Ghz band, this suggests that you are
running a wireless-a/b/g card.

I Can't Connect
This sounds more like a problem with your connection than a bug in
Pidgin. Your buddy list will not appear unless Pidgin makes a successful
connection to the messenger service. You should try asking for support
either on the Ubuntu forums (http://UbuntuForums.org) or in Pidgins IRC
channel.
