and now my KDE4 fonts are good (slightly antialised), but my KDE3 fonts,
Thunderbird, Firefox, & GIMP GUI are blurry.

correct monitor model, since Plug n Play isn't working. Unfortunately
this solution isn't very well documented at the moment.

I just tried reproducing this on my up to date feisty machine and a G450
card, and it seemed to work fine for me without any crashes. I set the
resolution to 1024x768, and it was set correctly when I logged back in.

Thanks for the info John. My next step would be to 'wedge' the xset
binary with a something dummy. At least I don't have to bother now. I
wonder which API xset uses for setting DPMS mmm.
Is this driver related in some way? I'm using the closed source nVidia
driver.

That's a weird crash. It might be related to your other bug report
38692. lcampagn, can you describe the hardware you are using and attach
your xorg.conf and Xorg's log file for when it starts up.
