/data/scott/Desktop
(an absolute path - no reference to $HOME)
pcmanfm-qt and a number of other programs (just was using qpdfview today and
had the same problem) apparently insisted upon adding /home/scott to
Public bug reported:
It used to be easy to add a PPA to the Other Software tab in Synaptic,
Click on "Add", a window comes up, cut/n/paste the APT line from the
website's page that holds the PPA info, and click on "Add Source".
Done. (possibly also fix a key problem...)
Now, when one clicks on

It seems to want to use $HOME as part of the reference, even though
$HOME was not part of the actual directory path in userdirs.dirs.

This is $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs.
(I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I believe that xdg looks for

I am using Lubuntu Next 17.10 from last October.
I had problems with gdebi-kde (some sort of missing module), and installed
gdebi,
which also has a problem (if I don't invoke from terminal, cannot install, as
no password window ever appears), but at least I can get around it.
