I resolved my issue with a firmware upgrade. The 203E firmware upgrade,
available at Dell.com allowed me to burn more DVD-R types (different
media IDs). I originally had 203C firmware. I understand that NEC also
issued firmware for 6500A drives other than the OEMs.

I cannot remember exactly how I fixed my system but I did get apt to work
again. The drivers were from Brother.
