Kubuntu restricted extras should have package
Speaking to TheMuso, I believe this is fixed in 12.04, with the newer
kernel. I'll re-open this if there's still an issue when I install precise.

Interesting. I tried that, but still saw the link not ready messages.
I then ran ethtool -s eth0 port tp, and brought up the interface, and it
works in 10 Mbit, half duplex mode.
Better than nothing!
