In up-to-date Karmic, when I attach my iPod Classic 80GB (USB), /dev/sdg
is created, but /dev/sdg2 isn't.
I've just tested it on a different system and works correctly.
# ls /dev/sdg*
/dev/sdg

fixed for me, too.
Mandriva solved it recompiling texlive, so yes, the ABI breakage might
have been solved by latest texlive's uploads.
