I'm the debian maintainer of the package and i'm preparing a fix for
oldstable (will ask for upload on jessie-pu during this week), that
would work for xenial too.
But the fixed packages is also present on jessie-backports and stretch
or later.
If you inly want to backport small changes to xenial
Yeah, this release needs to be ported to Xenial, i'm not an Ubuntu
developer so i'm not sure what is the workflow for this, i can help with
anything needed though.

The package just hit Debian Testing. It's pretty safe to sync (given the
Yakkety freeze), and it would be great to ship hoichess with an openning book.
Also, hoichess has a high popcon number.
