I provide this as a workaround.
it suggests that 588 and 589 are to new KEY_* values that are perhaps
merely not-handled but now-should-be in libcurses-ui-perl engine.

filesystem unmounts, and so the nfs unmount hangs because the file
server is unreachable.
The fix would be to unmount network file systems before stopping the
network.
But that would require stopping processes that use networ

copy has become corrupted.
Copying files to a memory stick should me a good backup not a corrupt
backup.
The excuse "your data is OK until you try to read it" isn't much of
a distinction

The WLAN is not defined in /etc/network/interfaces these days.
It was defined via network-manager and "available for all users". I
believe HAL manages it. The WLAN connects before I login (or lack of NFS
homedir would stop me logging in).

I think the problem would go away if usbcreator booted from a loop-back
ISO image on the memory stick.
isolinux and syslinux are pretty well merged; syslinux it ought to be
able to boot an iso image - as long as the initrd could continue and
mount the iso-image...
